Ask my husband what designers do and he will tell you I just colour in all day! Ha! Sure our job is amazing and fun and can involve making very cool visual things, but there is more to it than just that.

I bring it down to a very cool “skill”. Some professions save lives (also very cool), others fix stuff and others educate. As Designers we “give shape to ideas that shape our world, enrich everyday experiences, and improve our lives” * and its hard work! Turning ideas into tangible visual experiences! Phew…it makes me tired just typing that!

5 MYTHS ABOUT GRAPHIC DESIGN: (that resonate with me, or make me a tad angry at the same time)

1. Graphic Design is easy

GOOD design is NOT easy! It requires skill, experience, knowledge, patience and lots of dedication, just like any professional practice. We exist for a reason. We take your idea, turn it into a concept and then formulate this into an amazing piece of art that showcases who you are and what you do! Not easy! Our job is not only to make this happen, but gain your trust in this process.

2. Fixing a design is fast as a flick of the wrist

I shudder when clients say “oh it should only take 5mins to do that”! AHH! Nothing good comes from a quickly designed job. I always think back to a graphic I saw depicting the process: FAST, CHEAP, GREAT DESIGN: Pick ONLY two! You can’t have it all.

Fast & Cheap; it won’t be pretty, it won’t be great, but sure it will be cheap (and nasty) Fast & Great; you get what you pay for. Great & Cheap: Sure, but it won’t be done quickly for you!

3. Graphic Designers are natural born creative

I like to think of myself a creative in the natural sense, but it’s a passion not necessarily something that I was born with. We surround ourselves with inspiration to keep this flow and influence. Please don’t ask me to be creative ON THE SPOT! The creative/thought process takes getting into the ‘creative zone’ that requires time and patience. See the above myth!

4. Anyone can be a designer

I find this an extremely interesting myth. How many people out there doing 1 year courses and calling themselves designers? People who put together a powerpoint and then have ‘graphic designer’ added to their title. It cheapens my path; the knowledge and experiences that I have gained from my university degree in design, industry experience, and personal journey over 16 years to get to where I am today. I don’t believe “anyone” can be a designer. It takes talent, skill, knowledge and hard work!

5. Graphic Design can make you rich, fast!

Ha! Wouldn’t this be great! But alas, I do this because this is what I am good at, and I love it! While doing what I love it allows me to pay the bills, put food on the table and I get to keep my sanity.

So on that, I am off to get into my “zone”, ring a client, get the creative juices flowing, the project underway and create something amazing today!
